Glaucoma is a potentially blinding disease, usually presenting in middle – aged individuals, and is not noticed by the patient until its late stage, at which point, visual loss becomes irreversible. This run, regarding awareness of this disease, marks the first of its kind in the ophthalmic field, organized by Gift of Sight Eye Hospital, under the leadership of Drs. Varuna Rajasekaran & Vinod Nathaniel (daughter and grandson respectively, of late Dr. Rajasekaran)
The event will be held at ‘Race Course Road’, with the starting point being Ayesha Matriculation School on 14/2/2016, with start and finish at the same school. Registrations for the same are being done at Dr. Varuna Gift of Sight Eye Hospital, David Colony, Trichy,
There will be five categories regarding age – groups for this run:
1. Below 8 years old: will run a distance of one kilometre. The first twenty to finish, will receive medals.
2. 8 – 12 years old: will run a distance of three kilometres.  The first thirty to finish will receive medals.
3. 12 – 16 years old: will be covering the full 5 kilometre distance. The first fifty to finish, will be awarded medals for the same.
4. 16 – 50 years old: need to run the same 5 kilometre distance as above, with a similar reception of awards.
5. Individuals over 50 years old will have a separate event called the ‘Walkathon’ for a 3 kilometre distance, with medals for first fifty.
Individuals between 16 to 50 years of age will be divided into male and female categories, with separate awards for each. All participants in all categories will be awarded medals.
There will also be an option of ‘Run for Charity’. Those who opt for this will be sponsoring the run of children from poor families, who can’t pay the registration fees. Their names along with the those of the children they have sponsored will be displayed or announced during the event.

Following this run, at Ayesha Matriculation School, there will be tea and snacks for the runners, an awards ceremony, and an awareness talk about the dangers of glaucoma, how it occurs, and the easy measures we can take to put a stop to irreversible blindness due to this disease. After all, what can be more important than sight?
