The 10th mid-year Chemical Research Society of India (CRSI) Symposium in Chemistry was jointly organized by National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T) and Bharadhidasan University at National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T) during 23 - 25th July, 2015. In order to make the information and ideas presented at the Symposium widely available, abstracts were invited from students and faculties of different colleges, universities and institutions for poster presentation. The event witnessed a number of excellent presentations by eminent speakers. The three day Symposium included one silver medal lecture, one bronze medal lecture, one special evening lecture, 20 invited lectures and 330 poster presentations. More than 500 participants attended the symposium. It was indeed a great opportunity for the participants to network with the scientists working in different fields of Chemistry. All the sessions were held in the BARN hall of NIT-T. The Symposium was followed by a cultural programme and the CRSI general body meeting.
The opening day of the Symposium began with the inaugural addresses by Dr. Srinivasan Sundarrajan, Director, NIT-T, Dr. V. Krishnan, Former President, CRSI, Dr. S. Chandrasekaran, Former President, CRSI, Dr. R. Karvembu, Convener of the 10th mid-year CRSI Symposium in Chemistry and Dr. L. Cindrella, Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, NIT-T, followed by presidential remarks by Dr. Sourav Pal, President, CRSI and conference remarks by Dr. G. Mugesh, Secretary General, CRSI. The sessions were chaired by different experts where the speakers shared their research contributions with the spectators. The first lecture given by Dr. V. Pillai, Director, CECRI, Karaikudi was enriched with applications of graphene quantum dots and nanoribbons in electrocatalysis. The meeting served as the right platform to foster the growth of chemical research and education. The bronze medal lecture by Dr. G. Sekar, IIT-M, Chennai emphasized on the synthesis of metal nanoparticles, their use and reuse as catalysts. The day ended with the special evening lecture delivered by Dr. S. Chandrasekaran, Former President, CRSI, and Professor in the Department of Organic Chemistry, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. His popular talk on “Ethics in Research and Publishing” enlightened many young minds.
The second day of the symposium commenced with the silver medal lecture by Dr. Anil Kumar, Scientist, NCL, Pune. In his talk, he discussed about the physical chemistry aspect of organic reactions involving ionic liquids and water. The session included five valuable lectures presented by outstanding personalities in Chemistry.
The third day of the symposium included thematic sessions on metal-mediated synthesis. The meeting came to an end with the valedictory function. Dr. S. Muthusamy, Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Bharathidasan University welcomed the gathering, Dr. Sourav Pal, President, CRSI delivered valedictory address and Dr. Satish Patil, Secretary, CRSI, congratulated the office bearers of CRSI and local organizers for their efforts, hospitality and cooperation. The CRSI awarded six best poster awards to the young research scholars. The symposium came to a close with the photo session with the dignitaries.
